A little Show and Tell

Chuck Johnson & Shane Young

    About Laurel River Pro Lures

    My Story

Laurel River Pro was founded in 2020 by a down to earth fisherman looking for an edge. I opted for the namesake reflecting on the cool clear waters of Laurel River Lake. The lake I grew up fishing on, and it was never a cake walk for catching fish. High pressured, deep, mountain lake, that saw every lure color in the book.

"I got tired of being skunked by colors they no longer made, but my buddy still had" this drove me to start re-creating the classics you could no longer find, and creating new color patterns fish had never seen.

Over the years, I have honed my skills by talking to you, the fisher men and women. Without you, none of this is possible. I truly thank each and everyone of you!

I don't just Bass fish. I chase the night time spring shad spawn, like a Chicken Hawk chases a Chicken. "I don't do it because I want to; I do it, because I have to. I would, really, rather not. I am just helpless to the compulsion" -Tom Kelly.  The inland Striped Bass, Walleye, and topwater Bass fishing during the night time spring shad spawn is phenomenal. A complete thrill of exploding water that you can't always see, but feel! I urge you to give it a try if you haven't. First off, be safe and know where you're at on the lake!

Second off, From the Middle of March until the First of June. I become hard to find!

The Same goes for the Spring and Fall Crayfish Spawn. You wouldn't believe how many people haven't a clue there is such a thing? Well, I'm here to tell ya, there is. We have all heard of the "molt". Molting takes place after the male crayfish have spawned. They'll shed their exo. All of this is coinciding at the same time. The issue with the "molt" is male crayfish molt and quickly go back to hiding in the rocks. If you're waiting on the "molt" you've missed the best window.  When the bites right, you couldn't beat me off the lake with my grade school principals whoopin stick. "Yes, I'm showing my age"

Where will bass be picking off these vulnerable mudbugs? Rocks will point the way. It may sound oversimplified, but rocky substrate has the highest concentration of exposed crayfish, which in turn translates to the greatest numbers of feeding bass. That's not all, where you find these tasty Bass morsels in the spring, you'll find them again in the fall.

Prime conditions in most bass watersheds combine 45-50 degree average water temperature with rocks clean of silt or mud. Spring and Fall periods! This activity varies date wise each year, and can be extended or cut short. Its all dependent on the water temperature. To sum it up, you can expect a few weeks to a month of high volume movement.  Unlike bass that clean their spawning ground with their tails, crawfish rely on current or wave action to do their housework. The rocks must be clean to open up caves that can create networks of tunnels for spawning habitat.  During this time. The males will turn vibrant in their color contrasts. Darker vivid greens, blues, reds and oranges. Kind of like a tropical bird showing off for a female suiter!

With combining water temperature, how can you tell this bite is taking place? Look in your live well! When you catch a few fish, check your live well out for spat up craw claws.

    Our Commitment

At Laurel River Pro, I am committed to providing my customers with the highest quality products at the best possible prices. I work hard to source the best materials and use the latest technology to ensure that every product I sell is of the highest quality.

Float and pressure tests are done on all crankbaits before paint. If the tests fail, the blank is tossed. I won't market trash or waste my time painting it. If I can catch a problem before it arises, you the customer will never see it.

Swivels are tested after each installation on spinnerbaits, which are Gamakatsu brand swivels. My blades are custom made, and take weeks to build blade stock. They rival the clarity and action of a Hildebrandt, which is hard to compare to. Most of my secondary blades are Hildebrandt. My spinnerbait molds are custom made. I use the same spinnerbait mold to create the bladed jigs.

"Proof's in the puddin' with all the fish we have put in boats"

    Our Products

I offer a wide range of lures, including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, bladed jigs—you name it. Every bait I produce features colors and patterns that are strictly my own designs or complete redesigns.

As a fisherman myself, I understand the need to be different. A fish that reaches trophy size has lived for quite a few years and has seen countless versions of the same lures and colors. My goal is to give you something different enough to trigger bites from fish that have already seen it all.

I’m always working on something new—some of it so discreet, the Postal Service even gets fishy about it.

    Custom Paint and Finish

Do you have lures that need a new coat of paint? Ask about our custom paint pricing. Turn your old lures back into fish catchers.

We use UVLS mid coats on all our products including custom re paints of old baits. This helps protect and brighten the lure's colors for years to come from fade.
